CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur – Furniture making is one of the thriving industries in the North and it to flourish, there must be a combination of many factors like creativity coupled with technology.

To address the need for technological assistance, the Department of Science and Technology Region I (DOST-I), through its Provincial S&T Center – Ilocos Sur (PSTC-IS), collaborated with RB Andaya Furniture Works to provide skills training to Balaho’s Furniture Shop. The training zeroed in on the operations and maintenance of a 3-in-1 thickness planer machine conducted at Brgy. Calimugtong, Galimuyod, Ilocos Sur last 04 August 2021.

The training was attended by no less than its owner of Balaho’s Fueniture Shop, Herminigildo F. Del Rosario, and Gomer De Quia, one of the carpenters of the firm.

Randy B. Andaya, DOST-SETUP beneficiary, and owner of RB Andaya Furniture Works, served as the resource person for the training. According to Andaya, he was glad to help his co-furniture makers and support one another amidst the pandemic.

Andaya further showed the participants the right way for the safe use and maintenance of the machine as well as the do’s and don’ts during operation.

The firm was assisted through the DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program or SETUP. It was through the program that the shop was able to acquire a 3-in-1 Machine with Thickness Planer 18”, Jointer 10”, and Circular Saw 16”.

The human resource training is part of the program components to assist micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) like Balaho’s in order to address the technical problems and to improve the firm’s productivity and efficiency.

Del Rosario expressed his gratitude for the training opportunity provided to his firm and for his workers to acquire the techniques and know-how in operating the machines. He added that through this intervention, he hopes to improve his product, services, and operations.

DOST-SETUP is a strategy to encourage and assist the MSMEs in adopting technology and innovations to improve their operational efficiency, boost productivity, and promote competitiveness of their products and services. (By Ms. Laurine R. Sales, Project Assistant II, DOST PSTC-IS)
