Watch Me Pedal, Rope Puzzle, Feel the Shake and Cyclone are some of the exhibits found in the Regional Science Centrum

The Department of Science and Technology-MIMAROPA (DOST-MIMAROPA), in partnership with the Provincial Government of Marinduque, Office of the House Representative of Marinduque, and Marinduque State College (MSC), is set to launch the first-ever interactive science exhibits in the region in the first quarter of 2022, in time for the scheduled visit of DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Pena to the province.

The DOST-funded Regional Science Centrum, housed at the MSC, features 35 interactive exhibits that make science facts, principles, and concepts relatable and more understandable to the general audience. Among the exhibits include the “dancing worm” which explains magnetic fields; “frozen shadow” which tells about light; and “watch me pedal” which shows the movement of the bones and joints of the body, among others. These exhibits are curated with assistance from the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST).

Also, the facility will carry two (2) units of the STARBOOKS or the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Stations that can provide visitors hundreds of thousands of digitized science and technology resources in various formats. STARBOOKS can be used by students, teachers, even parents even without an internet connection. This is an innovative product developed by the Science and Technology Information Institute of the DOST (DOST-STII).

The Regional Science Centrum will provide an informal yet exciting and stimulating learning environment for the youth to ignite their interest in pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses that will help develop a science culture in the region, and eventually in the entire country.

Last 10 January 2022, representatives from DOST-MIMAROPA, MSC, and monitoring agency the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) held a meeting to follow up on the updates and discuss the details for the launching ceremony. The project is also fully supported by the Department of Education-Marinduque (DepEd-Marinduque) that will assist in the promotion and marketing of the facility by inviting elementary and secondary schools in the province to visit the centrum when it is completed.
