DOST, NorthMin consortia train Mindanaoan researchers during Pagmantala 2-day workshop
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in collaboration with the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (NorMinCIEERD) and the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Health Research and Development (NorMinCoHRD), train 48 Mindanao-based researchers during the Pagmantala: Research Publication Writing Workshop at the New Dawn Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
The two-day workshop conducted on 4-5 December 2023 trained budding researchers who wanted to enhance the quality of their publishable research outputs and effective dissemination of research findings.
Speaker Dr. Lesley C. Lubos kickstarted the workshop by delving into the fundamental concepts of research publication. “Research and development are closely linked to economic progress. The absence of research publications could hinder the application of scientific knowledge in various industries, potentially limiting economic growth and competitiveness,” he said. He enlightened participants on different types of publications and journals, emphasizing the critical factors in selecting an appropriate journal.
Dr. Lubos shared insights on identifying predatory journals, discussed publication ethics, and played a pivotal role as a mentor during the Manuscript Writing workshop.
Dr. Maria Theresa Isla-Cabaraban, from the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), focused on the intricacies of peer review.
Dr. Cabaraban also covered single-blind, double-blind, and open review processes, offering guidance on responding to comments and suggestions for manuscript revisions. Dr. Isla-Cabaraban also discussed publication open access, providing a comprehensive overview of different manuscript components and essential considerations in writing.
Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, who was also a mentor during the Manuscript Writing workshop, offered constructive comments and suggestions to further enhance the quality of manuscripts presented during the output presentation. He rounded off the workshop with a session on the dos and don'ts in manuscript writing. He provided valuable insights on the important components that should be included in each part of a manuscript.
At the end of the workshop, Ms. Reyna Jean Pagon, a researcher from Capitol University, said that the training was really useful, “I have learned a lot from this activity, particularly about the different search engines and the proper step-by-step process of publication, including the content requirements for a paper,” she said.
The Pagmantala Workshop not only equipped participants with essential skills in research publication but also served as a collaborative platform for networking and knowledge exchange among researchers in Northern Mindanao. The event underscored the commitment of the DOST and its partners in nurturing a culture of excellence and innovation in research and development within the region.
The collaborative efforts of all stakeholders reaffirm Northern Mindanao's dedication to fostering a vibrant and dynamic research community.
Attendees are from esteemed institutions including Mindanao State University at Naawan, Capitol University, Northern Bukidnon State College, Central Mindanao University, Bukidnon State University, Xavier University, Camiguin Polytechnic State College, Misamis University, Phinma Cagayan de Oro College, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Commission on Higher Education Region 10, St. Peter's College-Iligan, and JR Borja General Hospital.
