To enhance the skills of the cacao and lanzones growers in Mahinog, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Camiguin conducted a training workshop for the local farmers on 27-28 April 2021 held at the Municipal Agriculture Site, San Miguel, Mahinog, Camiguin. It has a total fund of Php 391,000 and is a collaborative project with the Municipality of Mahinog.

The training was conducted to strengthen the farmers' techniques on organic farming of cacao and lanzones. The participants were able to perform the preparation of planting media and the scientific process of lanzones and cacao grafting and budding.

Trainers from the Camiguin Polytechnic State College (CPSC) discussed additional topics that further enhanced the knowledge of the farmers in a more scientific approach to farming. The farmers were provided practical know-how on the following: Nursery Planning and Selections, Nursery Construction and Design, Preparation of Planting Media, Vegetative Propagation Techniques, and Common Seedling Diseases, Problems, Prevention, and Control.

"Dako akong pasalamat kay naka-attend ko ani na training og tungod ani daghan ko og nakat-unan na makalambo sa akong mga tanom. (I am very grateful that I attended the training. I learned many things that would eventually help me develop my produce)," said Necifora MagriƱa, a local farmer in the municipality.

The activity is part of an ongoing project of the agency under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST), one of the flagship programs of the DOST that help communities improve their lives through science and technology interventions. The program targets to empower the poorest and most depressed communities in the country through five entry points, namely:  health and nutrition, water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, livelihood/economic enterprise development, and disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.Furthermore, CEST is the response of the DOST to contribute in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) being pursued by the country relative to poverty reduction and people empowerment.
