Myka Rice Mill, a business based in Pres. M.A. Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte recently received assistance amounting to Php 455,000.00 for equipment and productivity upgrades from the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office IX (DOST-IX), through the agency’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

Said funding will be used to procure upgrades and additional equipment that is set to improve milling capacity of up to 1,000kg of palay per hour, compared to the previous 385kg/hr output.

DOST-IX in coordination with the supplier, also organized a training on equipment operation and maintenance as well as proper plant layout and 5S Good Housekeeping training as part of the SETUP package of assistance.

At present, the firm is the sole rice milling facility operating in the municipality but also caters to neighboring areas like Manukan and Katipunan. Prior to the DOST intervention,

the proponent experienced increased overhead costs, frequent delays, as well as issues on opportunity loss and quality degradation especially during peak season. With the acquisition of the rice mill and other modern equipment, the operations of Myka Rice Mill greatly improved.

SETUP is one of the flagship programs of the DOST that helps micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) adopt technological innovations to improve existing products, services, and operations that lead to increase in productivity and improvement in market competitiveness.
